The Carrefour de l'eau unveils a mobile water treatment plant to the general public.

H2O Innovation, one of the founding partners of the Carrefour de l'eau, is deploying a unique initiative in Quebec, a mobile laboratory dedicated to water treatment.

Quebec City, juillet, 30 2025 - Following the official launch of the project last April, the Carrefour de l'eau has taken another major step forward with the inauguration of its technology showcase. Accessible from this summer, the showcase is aimed at all stakeholders - from the general public to professionals - and is designed to raise awareness, inspire and mobilize around crucial water-related issues.

This installation marks a turning point in industrial water management. Concrete, operational, unique and innovative, this mobile laboratory offers a response to the urgent challenges linked to water and the growing scarcity of this resource.

A technological showcase to accelerate innovation

This technology showcase project is the first of the Carrefour de l'eau's structuring components to see the light of day, giving concrete expression to the cluster's ambition to make Quebec City a world leader in water-related technologies. It will serve as a demonstrator and testing ground for several other initiatives involving industry, science and municipal authorities.

The Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) will be conducting research and popularizing science on the theme of water this summer.

On the program: a guided tour of the technology showcase and educational workshops on the path of water in nature and in the urban environment, its sources of pollution and the various stages of treatment.

Activities will take place from July to mid-August at Quebec City's wastewater treatment plant, thanks to funding from CentrEau - Centre québécois de recherche sur la gestion de l'eau.

At the end of this summer program, the mobile plant will continue to play a central role in the sector's development. It will become the first test bed for demonstrating, spreading and advancing innovative technologies in the water sector.

In addition, Cteau will operate the mobile treatment plant throughout the technology showcase project. At the same time, as an independent third party, Cteau will develop a new protocol for validating water recycling as a new high-quality source that could even be used as drinking water.

A project supported by technical sponsors

The Carrefour de l'eau would like to thank the technical sponsors who made a significant contribution to the project: Georg Fischer, Emerson, Grundfos, Endress, Toray, Protec, Hach and Westburne. All leaders in their fields. They made a significant contribution by integrating their technology into the showcase, enabling wastewater to be treated directly at Quebec City's East End plant, replicating on a small scale the filtration process that will ultimately be deployed at the Carrefour recycling plant.

Quotes

"The Carrefour de l'Eau proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that here at home, we can imagine, develop and deploy technologies to solve global problems such as water management and its growing scarcity. The installation of this technology showcase on the city's premises also sends a strong message to all innovative companies with ambitions to change the world: Quebec City is reaching out to you!

Bruno Marchand, Mayor of Québec City

"The mobile water treatment and recycling plant is an opportunity to demonstrate to the general public, the scientific community, political decision-makers, industrial companies and water-consuming institutional complexes that our resource is precious, and that it's high time we developed greater resilience in the face of our 'real' drinking water needs. The use of recycled water from wastewater is the solution, and this is exactly what the Carrefour de l'eau technology showcase will demonstrate.

Frédéric Dugré, President and CEO of H2O Innovation

"Today, together, we are taking a major step forward not only for Carrefour de l'eau, but also for our city, our society, our industries and water, our most precious resource. Officially deploying the technology showcase is a major step forward. It's a step that demonstrates just how much we can value, protect and preserve our resource, while stimulating sustainable innovation and prosperous wealth creation throughout Quebec. All this makes me very proud and fills me with hope for the future!

Alexandre Guindon, General Manager, 2 Degrés and Carrefour de l'eau

"With the showcase, we aim to bring science to citizens, to make it more accessible and also to make cutting-edge advances and processes in sustainable water management more visible. It's a first step towards setting up the Carrefour de l'eau, of which INRS is a founding partner, and which will enable our researchers to work closely with industry and the innovation ecosystem to find innovative solutions for water recycling and reclamation."

Karine Souffez, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Innovation Support, INRS

"The challenges posed by climate change require Cteau and all those involved in the water sector to adapt and innovate. Our role as a technology gas pedal means we can encourage the development and acceptance of new technologies. The operation of the mobile plant will enable us to define a new protocol for validating this technology for water recycling in Quebec."

Pierre Rinfret, Cteau's Director of Strategy, Innovation and Partnerships

About Carrefour de l'eau

The result of a promising partnership between the City of Quebec, the Port of Quebec, H2O Innovation, Institut national de la recherche scientifique, 2 Degrés, Patriarche Architecture and Cteau, the Carrefour de l'eau will bring together under one roof all the resources needed to develop new technologies, train researchers and create innovative companies in the water sector. The future complex will also house a water recycling plant capable of serving companies that consume large quantities of drinking water for industrial purposes, as well as an interpretation and awareness center open to the general public.
